Ampex 407 is a professional-grade (+3 dB) backcoated audio mastering tape produced during the 1970s and 1980s, popular in professional and broadcast studios. These tapes offered generally excellent performance when compared with competing brands at the time. There were a number of generations of this tape, and all of them are now virtually unusable. The 407 is a part of the series of tapes made famous for sticky shed syndrome, meaning vintage reels usually require thermal treatment (baking) before they can safely pass over tape heads for playback or archiving.
