My name is Gergely Laszlo-Zwickl. I’m a video producer and I restore HIFI.
I lost my grandpa when I was a little kid. He was an electrical engineer for the legendary audio-video company called Orion. Spending my afternoons after school in my grandma’s house, my favorite thing was digging in cupboards and drawers looking for strange gadgets, transistors, audio parts. I didn't know what they were but knew they did something with sound and communication.
I have a deep passion for music and technology. My curiosity about sound showed my way to the radio. It started with school radio. Later, I built radio studios, worked as a DJ and program maker for local radio stations. From radio, I moved to broadcast television. I’ve been working as an on-air promo producer for premium movie channels in Europe. Later, moving towards to film post-production, I worked as a movie trailer editor. I was always surrounded by gadgets and gears.
And here I am again. After decades of audio-video editing, I found myself bringing a tape deck to life that was older than I am. It played the tape. And it felt good. Now I have a few good people around me, professionals in audio engineering. We play with gears together.
HIFI restoration opens new doors in technology and history. It’s an adventure, it connects with interesting people. It’s something artificial and human at the same time. It’s creativity, precision and tradition. It’s a connection with the past and real audio experience in the present.
Japan’s great audio brands and the engineers behind them were true pioneers in innovation that built a very exciting industry. Bringing old gear to life is something like time traveling in technology and sound.
